Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) is a wireless protocol transmitting at 2.4 GHz. It's designed and promoted by the Bluetooth SIG. Bluetooth LE is separate to and not compatible with the previous 'Classic' Bluetooth Basic Rate/Enhanced Data Rate (BR/EDR) protocol. Unlike Classic Bluetooth, devices do not have to pair. The Bluetooth 4.0 and Bluetooth 5.0 specifications allow devices to implement both LE and BR/EDR protocols on the same device.

The main features of Bluetooth LE are:

  • Standards based for inter-operability
  • Works with all popular operating systems including iOS, Android, macOS, Linux and Windows
  • Very low power and able to operate on battery power for years

This site is an unofficial directory of Bluetooth LE specifications, information, software/hardware products and programming information. If you are new to Bluetooth LE, read the overview. Otherwise, pick a topic from the sidebar.
